Freight Transport Association (FTA) Chief Executive, David Wells has written a letter to the Mayor of London. In the letter, he has requested a meeting to discuss the impact of the Mayors plans on the freight industry.
Sadiq Khan has already announced a package of proposals to improve air quality, which includes an additional central London charge which will come into action in The charge is expected to impact vans and lorries, a requirement for vans and worried to be Euro VI/6 across inner London as early as 2018 and ruling lorries to be Euro VI across all greater London by 2020.
The FTA have stated that these plans will increase costs for all transport businesses and operators, which could potentially put some of the smaller firms out of business completely.
Along with the letter, Mr. Wells also sent the new Mayor of London a copy of the FTA’s Freight Manifesto for London, which outlines how the Mayor could work with the logistics industry to create a stronger economy, safer road, and a better environment.
There are currently around 15,000 members of the FTA and this number is expected to continue to rise in the next few years. Currently, FTA members operate more than half of the UK lorry fleet and consign over 90% pf rail freight and 70% of exports by air or sea.
In his letter, Mr. Wells said: “The logistics industry is working – and succeeding – in improving its record on safety and emissions in London but more can be done, and crucially we believe it can be achieved without adding any unnecessary cost to London life and development.
“I must be honest and say that, given calls for simplistic HGV bans, the way policy may develop in London concerns our 15,000 member businesses more than almost any other issue in the UK.”
