The Freight Transport Association’s Transport Manager conference series got underway in Chepstow last week, with a topical programme including a discussion on how the UK leaving the EU will affect the logistics industry and what EU legislation should be retained or scrapped.
Nick Jones, Traffic Commissioner for Wales, outlined his department’s new traffic area responsibilities and highlighted licensing priorities for 2017 while DVSA’s Alan Coombes explained the concept of Earned Recognition.
Delegates received new advice from FTA about O License safety requirements and learned about existing and proposed accreditation schemes. On top of this, FTA’s Head of Engineer, Andy Mair offered tips on how to prevent trucks causing incidents that could potentially close motorways, such as shed loads, tyre blow-outs and fuel spillages.
James Hookham, FTA Deputy Chief Executive had this to say: “This year’s programme focuses on key issues that transport managers need to be looking at over the coming months. Brexit is the burning platform and FTA is holding monthly webinars for members to keep them updated, but while we’re still in the EU it’s business as usual.
He continued: “Keeping up to date with current legislation is vital to enable transport managers to run an efficient and compliant operation – FTA’s Transport Manager conferences are the best way for them to ensure they’re ahead of the game.”
FTA Transport Manager runs until December at venues all over the UK, giving transport managers and those in charge of road transport fleets the opportunity to hear from key industry speakers and experts.
