It was only last Summer that the UK voted in its majority to leave the EU. After recent discussions and in news, it looks like Brexit may actually happen. It will be a few years before this kicks into action but what does this mean for the transport industry?
After discovering that the Government’s position is a full removal from the single market, many companies across the country are questioning what this will mean for them as a business.
The first change that we are most likely to see is a harder regulation of goods coming across the channel from the continent. With a very large number of trucks regularly using the Euroshuttle as well as Dover Port it could mean that more checks could lead to serious delays.
Every vehicle will need to be checked as well as filling out various types of forms to gain access to the UK. This has led to concerns that even computerised systems that allow online filing and documenting may not be able to cope with the overload on incoming forms which is understandably a big worry for many businesses within the industry. Experts have estimated that even if they do improve the IT system, it still may not be able to cope with this volume of incoming traffic. Predictions of up to 24h delays for lorries and up to 4 day delays for containers.
Remember Operation Stack back in 2015? French ferry workers went on strike leading to a pile up which cost businesses over £21M just in stock that had to be thrown away. Custom checks may mean gridlock becomes an expectation when checking in at the boarder once Brexit gets underway.
