Holidaymakers who are travelling through Dover are being encouraged to stock up on vital supplies after severe delays last weekend.
The Port is expected to be busy over the next couple of days as people arrive to cross the Channel. Traffic jams were 12 miles deep last weekend and some people were waiting for 15 hours on gridlocked roads.
Police have stated that the disruption was down to the volume of holiday traffic, couple heightened security checks by French officials after a string of terror attacks. The Port of Dover said that it isn’t expecting the extent of the delays to be repeated again.
Kent police have released a statement saying: “Motorists planning to travel towards Dover this weekend are being advised to take plenty of food and water before setting off.
“Those planning to use the roads towards Dover are being urged to check the latest travel updates from Highways England and their travel operator, and take adequate provisions and any medication in case there is a disruption.”
The major delays could have a knock-on effect on surrounding areas, the police stated, urging people who live near the port or who are planning on travelling near it to plan ahead and possibly look for alternative routes.
The Port of Dover told travellers: “While we do not anticipate further severe delays, this remains our busiest time of the year and we do expect increased traffic volumes as the holiday season continues to get underway. Currently, roads to the port remain clear and free flowing, and there are no queues inside the port.”
The French authorities are warning that heavy congestion is likely for key routes throughout the country. Motorists are being advised to delay their journeys until Sunday, as a second Black Saturday is expected on 6th August.
